GENERAL SUMMARY:
We are seeking a part-time (40%) Upper School English teacher for the 2023-2024 school year to teach two sections of ninth or tenth grade. In addition to having at least two years of experience, the ideal candidate possesses the ability to foster and nurture a learning environment that is engaging and accessible to a broad and diverse range of students as well as the ability to connect curriculum content to student experiences and cultural frames of reference.? This creative classroom teacher should enjoy building curriculum and working collaboratively with colleagues.?
The Upper School English program is designed to foster a student’s growth and confidence as a thinker, reader, writer, and individual. In a supportive environment, students are asked to make connections between the issues and themes highlighted in literature to those found in their own worlds. Using fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as classic and modern writings, students strengthen their reading skills on a literal level. As critical thinking skills are emerging and maturing in this age group, they use strategies to uncover deeper meaning. Students discuss and write about their insights to hone expressive language abilities, both creatively and analytically. Grammar is taught to bolster the effectiveness of the students’ language. ?
CORE QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in English literature or related field
Demonstrated excellence in teaching, at least two years
Demonstrated ability to integrate technology in content delivery/skill development
Experience with inquiry-based learning pedagogies
A commitment to culturally-competent teaching
Familiarity with giving and receiving feedback for professional growth
Growth mindset, flexibility, and openness to collaboration and experimentation
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduate degree preferred
Familiarity or experience working in independent schools
A strong desire to help educate courageous scholars
Experience creating differentiated learning opportunities aligned with formative assessments and continuous feedback to optimize students outcomes
