Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is seeking an English teacher for 8th and 9th grades starting in August 2023.
Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 400 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 37 states and over 30 countries. Set on a beautiful 250-acre campus south of Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota, SSM offers a mix of traditional and progressive education. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in working with Middle School students and experience with curriculum development as our 8th and 9th grade English curricula are currently under revision. Both the 8th and 9th grade courses focus on the development of writing and critical thinking skills and the study of literature. We expect our students to explore diverse voices and works, so candidates must be well-versed in a wide variety of young adult literature and other texts appropriate for this age group. Candidates should love reading and writing and be able to model that love for their students.
In addition, the English Department is looking for a collegial team player to work with other members of the department in regular meetings and collaborative projects.
Shattuck St. Mary’s is a boarding/day school and faculty members are expected to be involved with both co-curricular activities and standard residential life duties involved with a residential school setting. In addition, full-time teachers serve as advisors to a group of students.
- Candidate will have demonstrated experience instructing in a student-centered, innovative educational environment, be familiar with technology in the classroom, and be well-versed in the academic and developmental needs of students in middle school.
- Candidates should have at least 2-4 years’ experience teaching; however, we will consider exceptional first-year teaching candidates.
- Bachelor’s Degree in English or other relevant field; Master’s Degree or relevant coursework preferred.
