The Opportunity
The Academy at Penguin Hall, an innovative college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12, seeks a dynamic English teacher beginning in the 2023-24 academic year. Successful candidates will have a degree in the field and high school (or possibly middle school) teaching experience. The position will include teaching five sections (likely 9th grade World Literature, 10th Grade American Literature, and a writing workshop or elective), developing curriculum, and working as part of a collaborative department. Experience in teaching writing is required, and experience creating interdisciplinary units is preferred. Other responsibilities include serving as an advisor, sponsoring a club and/or activity, and participating broadly in the life of the school.

The ideal candidate will be a flexible, innovative educator with deep content knowledge and an infectious enthusiasm for guiding students to become informed readers, writers, and critical thinkers. They will have command of pedagogical best practices to develop students’ reading, writing, and research skills, and be passionate about the integration of literature with history and other subjects. They will model a growth mindset, actively pursue professional development, and be an effective collaborator with a high-performing, fun-loving faculty. Most importantly, they will have both an understanding of and love for working with girls in grades 9-12.

Responsibilities
- Teach five classes to multiple grade levels (likely 9th grade World Literature, 10th Grade American Literature, and a writing workshop or elective)
- Develop students’ writing and analysis skills in a student-centered, discussion-based environment
- Develop an inclusive classroom culture that supports the well-being of all students
- Plan student-centered, innovative lessons, materials and assessments
- Provide appropriate differentiation to support individual learners in the classroom
- Routinely reflect on lessons, seek feedback and demonstrate desire to continually grow one’s teaching practices
- Participate in curriculum development and review to create a unified curriculum of reading and writing; propose and teach new electives as appropriate
- Collaborate and communicate regularly with other faculty, administration and parents about the academic, social, and emotional health of students
- Serve as advisor to a small group of students
- Participate in the professional life of the school by attending meetings, serving on committees and carrying out other duties as directed

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English or related field; advanced degree preferred
- At least three years experience teaching literature and writing
- Effectively differentiates instruction and can successfully use a variety of teaching strategies to meet students’ needs
- Proven track record of creating equitable and inclusive curriculum and classroom
- Uses technology thoughtfully and creatively to enhance teaching and learning
- Demonstrates ability to question thoughtfully and problem-solve effectively
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
