The Writing and Communication Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.
The incumbent will teach a total of five courses; four courses in writing and communication and one section of a writing-intensive first-year seminar. Oberlin has no required first-year writing courses; our slate of writing for college courses focuses on developing students’ capacity for persuasive communication in written, spoken, and multimodal forms; for mobilizing a variety of linguistic resources for communication; for analyzing and navigating a variety of rhetorical situations; and for developing their composing processes and the ability to intentionally adapt their processes for different purposes.
Our first-year seminars are taught by faculty from across the disciplines and are designed to engage students in the skills and habits of mind of a liberal arts education.
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D degree in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2023-24; we are especially interested in candidates with PhDs in Writing Studies/Composition. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable. Oberlin College is committed to student and faculty diversity, equity and inclusion. The incumbent will bring understanding of or experience working with underrepresented and diverse academic populations. Oberlin is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service. Oberlin recruits, employs, trains, compensates, and promotes regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, veteran’s status, and/or other protected status as required by applicable law.
