POSITION PROFILE
POSITION TITLE: High School English Instructor
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Full Time/Exempt (second semester 22-23 school year)
REPORTS TO: High School Principal
An English instructor at Notre Dame de Sion High School not only provides high quality, innovative, and rigorous instruction, but is instrumental in our school goal to develop students who are well-rounded, faith-filled citizens and servant leaders. QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Knowledge and understanding of and commitment to the Sion mission.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English, Education, or related subject matter.
- Special consideration given to candidates with Master’s degrees in subject area with the ability to teach dual high school/college courses.
- Knowledge of best practices in instruction and curricular design for English, including design thinking, experiential learning, writing across the curriculum, authentic assessment, and standards-based curriculum development.
- Deep understanding of the specific needs of adolescent girl development, including social emotional needs.
- Demonstrated classroom management and facilitative skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with students, parents, faculty and staff.
- Flexibility in working with a variety of faculty across the divisions on faculty committees.
- Ability to set goals and accept professional feedback.
- Must demonstrate competency with school related technology.
- Maintain professional credentials as required by Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) or other accrediting agencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Effectively integrates professional standards of English education into everyday classroom instruction and curriculum design.
- Prepares and implements lesson plans for such instruction.
- Collaborates with faculty in all disciplines with an eye towards providing interdisciplinary opportunities.
- Incorporates the skills from the Sion Success Outcomes into the English curriculum.
- Creates and teaches a two-week, place based, experiential learning course as a part of Sion's Deep Dive programming.
- Teach and choose world and multi-genre literature that cultivates critical thinking, empathy, an exploration of women’s conditions, and an exploration of deep philosophical questions.
- Employ a variety of progressive educational strategies that make learning engaging, experiential, productive, and enriching.
- Cultivate growth in student writers by teaching them the skills they need to effectively communicate their ideas in writing.
- Works with the Academic Directors Team towards the continual refinement and improvement of the English program.
- Utilizes ACT data to inform instruction and improve student learning.
- Map curriculum to ACT Standards and Sion Success Outcomes.
- Maintain current attendance and student records.
- Be flexible in working with faculty members from other departments with the goal of cross-curricular alignment.
- Demonstrate competency and creativity with school-related technology.
- Participate in required duties such as study hall or lunch supervision, class coverage for absent teachers, and supervision at select after school events.
- Attend all required faculty and professional development meetings.
- Continue personal and professional development through attending conferences or other development opportunities to ensure that teaching practices remain current.
- Assists with other projects, programs and planning as assigned by the High School Principal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work in a classroom environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- Occasionally bend, stoop, and squat.
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled environment.
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
